Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Understanding the impact our actions can have on the environment, we have created and implemented a Resource Conservation Policy company-wide. The policy focuses on management in three areas: energy, water, and waste. And policy objectives include but are not limited to energy consumption improvement, lower water usage, reduce/reuse/recycle where appropriate, proper disposal of hazardous waste, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and the conservation natural resources.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Energy Management

Stuller supports national energy efficiency policies such as Energy Star that improve energy usage by continuously establishing, implementing and supporting effective energy management programs that provide a safe and comfortable work environment for associates.

We also encourage our associates to practice energy conservation in both their professional and personal lives. Below is a list of specific activities that Stuller engages in with regards to energy conservation

  • Converted the Plant to energy efficient ballasts & bulbs
  • Recalibrated our energy management system for air conditioning, heating and hot water settings
  • Reduced exhaust in the wax department by converting to a smaller more efficient system, which also reduced noise levels
  • Reduced exhaust on large dust collectors along with work cell upgrades requiring less horsepower. Also we reduced noise levels, which enabled thermostat to be raised two degrees
  • Implemented a PC shutdown system for non-working hours
  • All major PC monitors in the company have been replaced with flat panels
  • Implemented Turn Off Lights Policy plant wide for areas not occupied
  • When purchasing new equipment, if available, will purchase Energy Star rated items
  • Currently we are tracking gas and electric usage in order to monitor savings
  • All vending machines are equipped with energy misers (energy efficient)
  • Change eight air conditioning units that were 18 years old to newer, more energy efficient models
  • Change Stuller Inc. from a negative pressure to a positive pressure, better air quality
  • Installed back draft dampers on all exhaust vents to keep outside air out of the building
  • Upgraded the EMS system to allow for free cooling on certain days

Waste Management

With regards to waste management, Stuller’s goal is to develop a comprehensive plan that includes the ability to identify each waste stream to reduce, reuse and/or recycle where possible; proper management of the generation and disposal of all hazardous wastes regulated by The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA); and assurance that all effluent from the wastewater treatment system complies with all local, state and federal regulations.

Below is a specific list of the steps we take to ensure our waste is handled properly:

  • By practicing LEAN manufacturing techniques, we are reducing waste by limiting our purchases to only what we need
  • We recycle cardboard, plastic, waste, oil, e-waste, toner and ink cartridges and batteries
  • We use a “bulb eater” to crush florescent blubs and have the drums properly disposed of to eliminate mercury contamination in land fills
  • The effluent from our wastewater treatment system complies with all local, state and federal regulations
  • We manage the generation and disposal of all hazardous wastes as regulated by the RCRA

Water Management

Developing a comprehensive water management plan, which follows the Best Management Practices (BMPs) as outlined by the Federal Energy Management Program is our focus when it comes to efficient water management.

Here’s how we’re putting those practices in motion throughout our facility:

  • We’ve installed low flow faucets complete with electronic sensors
  • We’ve installed automatic flush toilets
  • Utilize closed loop systems on equipment when available
  • Cooling tower uses a recirculation process; water is only added for evaporation

A vital part of our day-to-day operations, logistics demands efficient and effective processes to achieve excellence.

We’ve taken several steps to ensure our procedures are well organized and cost effective:

  • We’ve installed low flow faucets complete with electronic sensors
  • We’ve reduced on-hand box inventory
  • Applied the recycle logo on all packages to encourage responsible disposal of product packaging
  • Implemented a reuse vs recycle mentality
  • Use recyclable paper in place of plastic
  • Grouping customer orders creating less shipments
  • Update mailing lists to avoid duplication and waste
  • Printing recyclable mailings by using water based inks
  • For visuals, we use laminated paper, making the charts reusable
  • Replaced bubble wrap with biodegradable paper
  • Applied the recycle logo on all product poly bags
