Setting Procedure for Tulipset® Solitaires

Tulipset® Solitaires are designed to set your stones above the open joint at the top of the prongs. They allow you to set deep stones, are uniquely designed to have the maximum amount of metal at the girdle line, and therefore are one of the strongest setting designs.

Round Tulipset®
1. Notch prongs carefully. Remove flash after notching. (Fig. 1)
2. Always cut your seat above the open joint. (Fig. 1) Cut approximately one-third into the crown.
3. If you have a deep stone, you can cut below the open joint, but always make your bending point above the open joint. 4. Using either pliers or a prong pusher, bend your prongs so they fold over the girdle, making sure you don’t overbend. (Fig. 2)
5. Cleanup should be done with a safety-edge file, bringing the shape of the setting to a nice, rounded edge over the stone. Clean up your file work with a pumice wheel.

Marquise Tulipset®
1. The same principles hold true for a marquise in that you will set your girdle above the open joint.
2. Use your favorite point burr to clear out for the pavilion and the crown as you would for any style marquise setting. Carefully cut your side prongs.
3. A good tip is to prebend one end prong to lessen your risk of breaking the stone, and to check your other seats to see if it is sitting level.
4. Place your stone in the setting, bend your opposite end prong, and then push over your side prongs next.
5. Cleanup is the same technique as the round.

Princess Tulipset®
1. Princess-cut stones are generally deep stones, but the same principle holds true in that you must cut your seats above the open joint.
2. You may have to clear out metal for your pavilion using a round burr. (Fig. 3)
3. Make sure you clean out your points as you would for a marquise.
4. If you have room, prebend two prongs before setting and then bend the other two prongs over.
5. If your stone has too deep a belly for prebending, place the stone in its seat and working opposite corners, bend the prongs over the stone.
6. Cleanup is the same technique as for the rounds and marquises.
