When deciding on which bur to buy or to use, be sure to take into account the material of each bur and its use with precious metal counterparts

• HIGH CARBON:

More precise cutting, can be used effectively at slow speeds, better strength and hardness with tungsten & vanadium added

Can be used with: gold, silver, platinum, copper, bronze

• HIGH SPEED STEEL:

(HSS) Heat resistant, tougher than carbide, less chatter

Can be used with: gold, silver, copper, brass, aluminum, pewter

• CARBIDE:

Heat and wear resistant, maintains sharp edge, works best at medium to high speeds

Can be used with: gold, silver, platinum, copper, brass, bronze, titanium, steel, stainless steel

• DIAMOND:

Good for grinding, carving, and sculpting; shorter lifespan than carbide burs

Can be used with: stone, glass, precious and non-precious metals

Angled 45º, 70º, or 90º; this bur is great at flush setting and cutting seats in prongs.

CONE BUR

The cone bur is used to enlarge and debur holes, and adjust the position of holes in a flush setting. It's normally used at lower speeds.

INVERTED CONE BUR
