Finishing and polishing are the final steps in jewelry manufacturing and crucial components of repair work. Although we recommend taking as much care as possible during the manufacturing and repair processes to reduce the amount of polishing needed, some degree is inevitably required. And so no bench is complete without a proper finishing and polishing setup. Some of our favorite discs and points for polishing are in the Dedeco® Sunburst® line.
ABRASIVES
Sunburst® radial discs are ideal for finishing, smoothing, and high-luster polishing of all precious, semi-precious and non-precious metals, acrylics, and ceramics. Pumice discs will not scratch stones, and all discs generate little dust and heat all the while eliminating the need for a polishing compound.
Sharp, specially treated, ceramic abrasive grain is imbedded throughout each disc’s thin, flexible bristles, enabling them to work faster and last longer than rubber wheels, brushes, buffs, and conventional sanders.
For most applications, we recommend operating in the 3,000 to 18,000 RPM range. Lower speeds allow for a softer touch, providing greater flexibility and subtler results. Higher speeds result in material removal and thus shorten the lifespan of the disc, so we recommend applying light pressure with the tips of bristles.
Coarse grits remove material, making them perfect for removing large scratches or changing the shape of a piece. Fine grits are generally used after coarse grits and produce a surface finish not possible with coarse grits. We recommend using an array of grit types to achieve your desired finish and so you’ll be prepared for general repair work.
