Use this guide to find the perfect diamond screener for your business.
In today’s fast-paced jewelry industry, accuracy and efficiency are everything — especially when it comes to identifying natural diamonds from lab-grown or simulants. As the demand for transparency grows and lab-grown diamonds become increasingly common in the market, having a reliable diamond screener is no longer optional — it’s essential. Whether you’re a seasoned bench jeweler, a retail associate, or a gemologist, the right screener can protect your reputation, boost customer confidence, and streamline your operations.
What Are Diamond Screeners?
A diamond screener is a tool used to quickly and accurately determine whether a diamond is natural, lab-grown, or a simulant — such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. These devices use advanced technology, such as UV light, or spectroscopy, to analyze a stone’s physical and chemical properties. While screeners don’t provide full grading or identification reports like those from a gemological lab, they serve as a first line of defense in your workflow.
Always Screen!
Traditional methods of identifying natural diamonds — such as checking inscriptions, spotting inclusions, or relying on optical differences — are no longer reliable. Inscriptions can be altered, inclusions aren’t definitive, and newer HPHT lab-grown diamonds aren’t magnetic like some older ones. That’s why we strongly recommend screening every stone — even those from us. At Stuller, we conduct more screening than nearly anyone in the nation, and we still occasionally find undisclosed lab-grown diamonds, not due to malicious intent, but because today’s stones are simply too advanced to differentiate without the right technology. With the right screener, you can be confident in every diamond you work with.
What’s the Difference Between Diamond Screeners and Testers?
Although often used interchangeably, diamond screeners and diamond testers serve different purposes — and understanding that distinction is key to making the right investment for your business.
A diamond tester typically measures thermal or electrical conductivity to determine if a stone is a diamond. These are great for distinguishing diamonds from common simulants such as cubic zirconia. However, most testers cannot tell the difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond. While lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to its natural counterpart, the recipes and methods labs are using to create these diamonds add in elements that can fool these hand held testers — often resulting in Moissanite as a result.
A diamond screener is designed to screen stones for potential lab-grown characteristics using more advanced detection methods. A tester will give you the basic yes-or-no answer as to whether the stone is a diamond, while a screener will help you determine whether it’s likely natural or lab-grown. Although, through recent advances in technology some diamond screeners are able to identify stones where others leave it up to the user to interpret the results to differentiate the stones.
