Stuller’s Battle of the Benches®

What is it?

Four exceptional bench jewelers will be invited to compete in a real-time design contest during Stuller’s 2017 Bench Jeweler Workshop.

All four contestants, plus one alternate competitor, will receive

  • Travel expenses up to $500

  • Free event registration, plus registration for one guest

  • Free accommodations during the workshop (at a hotel of Stuller's choice)

The competition will take place over the three days of the workshop. On the first day, all contestants will receive the exact same materials, tools, guidelines, and challenges.

A winner will be chosen for each day, and an overall winner will be declared on the last day.

Day 1


Design, model, and render projects in CAD (Matrix 8, RhinoGold, or similar program).

Day 1 Prize: CAD/CAM credit of $250.00

Day 2

Parts and Pieces Challenge

Compete with your fellow contestants by fabricating a custom piece on the spot from an assortment of components, metals, and gemstones.

Day 2 Prize: Stuller credit of $250.00

Day 3

The Finish Line

Prep, polish, assemble, and set your original CAD entry piece once it is cast.

This is a FOUR HOUR time period.

Day 3 Prize: Stuller credit of $250.00

Overall Winner

On the last day of the contest, the judges will pick an Overall Winner, who will receive—

  • Their piece produced and finished by Stuller (up to $500.00 value)
  • A $500.00 Stuller account credit
  • Their work featured in, From the Bench, and Stuller social media
  • A one-of-a-kind trophy

What are the qualifications?

  • Proficiency in Matrix® 8 CAD, RhinoGold, or comparable jewelry design software.

  • Ability to create a renderable CAD design around the desires and needs of a customer.

  • Willingness to work in front of a live audience.

  • Ability to work under challenging time constraints.

  • Ability to transform a raw cast into a finished, ready-to-wear piece of jewelry.

  • Proficiency in prepping, assembling, polishing, and stone setting.

  • Ability to use either a laser welder or traditional soldering methods.

How do I enter?

  • Submit a CAD design, along with a brief bio, by February 3, 2017. This model may contain multiple parts for assembly.

  • If you are chosen to compete, the design you submit for entry will play a big role later in the contest. We will cast it for you, and you will prep, polish, assemble, and set it as part of the "Finish Line" phase of the competition.

  • By February 10, 2017, our panel of experts will choose the four winning finalists and one alternate.
