Care of Lever Backs

By Stuller | August 15, 2012

Lever Back or Euroback findings and earrings have gained strong acceptance in the market. Stuller offers an ever-expanding selection of these styles to help you seize this opportunity.

The lever back finding is a precision assembly relying on tight tolerances and a small amount of lubrication to function well. Here’s how to care for them properly.

Because the pre-lubricated hinge is a precision fit, once that lubrication dissipates (whether due to ultrasonic cleaning, steaming, heating, or simply extended operation), the hinge will begin to bind and may not snap into place properly. This is normal, and can be easily remedied by applying a small drop of light oil to the hinge, and working it in by operating the mechanism. Mention this maintenance procedure to your customer at the conclusion of the purchase, and it will help avoid any unnecessary surprises after the sale.

Also remember that in solder or torch work on any spring loaded finding, you run the risk of annealing the spring, thus ruining the component’s ability to function properly. If you choose to perform solder work on one of these findings, remove the hinge pin and finding back beforehand, then re-pin and rivet the hinge after the hot work is complete, taking care to achieve a close fit without binding. Heat sink mud or similar products can be used so that the mechanism doesn’t have to be removed. We recommend Thermo Shield (54-4030 or 54-4031).
